We’re thrilled to announce that we are working with the Bachilleres Plantel Puerto Morelos 28 (high school, ages 14-17) here in Puerto Morelos as a fiduciary for the educational and arts grant that they received from US non-profit, Positive Legacy.
Conexión’s Executive Director, Bridget Espinosa, and I met with high school principal, M. Olga L. Gómez Novelo, who is responsible for creating the project and writing the grant proposal. The project is 3 fold, including laptops, folkloric dance skirts, and musical instruments. How are those three related? Keep reading to find out!
Nos complace anunciar que estamos colaborando con el Bachilleres Plantel Puerto Morelos 28 (alumnos tienen entre 14-17 años) aquí en Puerto Morelos como fiduciarios de la beca educativa y artística que recibieron del ONG estadounidense Positive Legacy.
La Directora Ejecutiva de Conexión, Bridget Espinosa, y yo nos reunimos recientemente con la directora de la escuela preparatoria, M. Olga L. Gómez Novelo, quien es responsable de crear el proyecto y redactar la propuesta de la beca. El proyecto tiene tres partes, incluyendo laptops, faldas de danza folclórica e instrumentos musicales. ¿Cómo se relacionan estos tres elementos? ¡Sigue leyendo para descubrirlo!
Olga’s initial idea was to request laptops for students to use to complete their homework after school. The reality is that many students’ families can not afford to purchase a computer or tablet for their student, and some may not even have internet access at home. By creating a computer lab at the high school, Olga hopes to improve students’ ability to keep up with their studies and complete their homework on time.
La idea inicial de Olga era solicitar laptops para que los estudiantes las usarán para completar sus tareas después de la escuela. La realidad es que muchas familias de los estudiantes no pueden permitirse comprar una computadora o tableta para su estudiante, y algunos ni siquiera tienen acceso a internet en casa. Al crear un laboratorio de computación en la escuela secundaria, Olga espera mejorar la capacidad de los estudiantes para mantenerse al día con sus estudios y completar sus tareas a tiempo.
The second part of the grant funds went towards purchasing skirts for the folkloric dance group that the school created. Olga believes that students need to be well rounded and have creative outlets. Folkloric dance is not only good for their mental and physical wellbeing, but it is also vital that students celebrate and show pride in their culture. The skirts are now completed and the students were able to wear them to the final event of the year on June 4th, 2024. They look amazing, don’t they?
La segunda parte de los fondos de la beca se destinó a la compra de faldas para el grupo de danza folclórica que la escuela creó. Olga cree que los estudiantes necesitan ser personas completas y tener salidas creativas. La danza folclórica no solo es buena para su bienestar mental y físico, sino que también es vital que los estudiantes celebren y se enorgullezcan de su cultura. Las faldas ya están terminadas y los estudiantes pudieron usarlas en el evento final del año el 4 de junio de 2024. Se ven increíbles, ¿verdad?
Musical instruments round out the third part of the grant funding. Olga purchased guitars and other musical instruments which provide another way for students to express themselves. Local musician and director of cultural community center El Telar, León Farias, has been involved with the project as well and El Telar will be donating 6 electric guitars to the school to allow more students the opportunity to practice and improve their skills. All of these instruments will be used for music lessons, as well as to play for the folkloric dancers during their presentations in the community. There is a high demand for live music here in the Riviera Maya, so learning this skill may ignite a passion which can later turn into a profession for a number of the students.
Los instrumentos musicales completan la tercera parte del financiamiento otorgado. Olga compró guitarras y instrumentos musicales que proporcionan otra forma para que los estudiantes se expresen. León Farias, músico local y director del centro comunitario cultural El Telar, también ha estado involucrado en el proyecto. El Telar donará 6 guitarras eléctricas a la escuela para brindar más oportunidades a los estudiantes de practicar y mejorar sus habilidades. Todos estos instrumentos se utilizarán para clases de música, así como para acompañar a los bailarines folclóricos durante sus presentaciones en la comunidad. Hay una gran demanda de música en vivo aquí en la Riviera Maya, por lo que aprender esta habilidad puede despertar una pasión que más adelante podría convertirse en una profesión para varios de los estudiantes.
The grant was awarded by US non-profit organization Positive Legacy who supports a number of projects here in the Riviera Maya. “Positive Legacy integrates music and service to benefit people and the planet. We are grantmakers who coordinate environmental and humanitarian service projects fueled by the power of music. We transcend cultural boundaries by attending to the needs and aspirations of the communities where music happens. We create sustainable support through action from musicians and fans.”
